Barton School Council Forum 2011

Barton School Council Forum June 2011

Castledyke has had a School Council for the past 10 years and I have been involved throughout its existence. Each year usually in October, every Upper School class elect a boy and a girl to represent them and Lower School on the school council. We then meet at least once every month and we discuss issues that the children, teachers or Head Teacher have raised. Once per term the school council is represented at the Barton School Council Forum which gives the school councils from all the schools in Barton the chance to get together with local councillors and council employees to discuss issues relating to Barton itself.
The school council elect a Chairperson, Vice Chair and Secretary amongst themselves. The Chair controls the meeting and ensures that everyone is able to have a say. The Secretary makes notes, which are then made available to the rest of the school.
The school council are involved in major decisions within the school. In the past this has included their input regarding the refurbishment and involvement in interviews. They are responsible for choosing playground equipment and compiling questionnaires on a range of topics. It is hoped that the role of the school council will progress each and every year.

Some thoughts from our School Councillors:

'We allow the children to bring their ideas forward and we bring those ideas to life whenever we can. School councillors are a sensible group who organise events and other projects. For example, the school council provides equipment for the school. We think it is important that the children have playground toys to interact with'. Joseph O'Neill, Year 4.

'The school council are all about helping people and caring about people. We get our own budget aswell and we have to plan how to use this money. You have to be responsible and mature'. Emily Jones, Year 4.
