What do we mean by Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

The SEND Code of Practice defines special education needs as:

• has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
• has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.

Difficulties maybe short term or long term, children may need extra or different help from that given to others. At Castledyke, many steps are taken to support them throughout their time at the school. Quality first teaching and well planned differentiation are essential to achieve this.

Some examples of the support we provide are:

• Dyslexia screening
• Phonics 1:1
• In-house counsellor
• Sensory breaks
• Speech and language
• Occupational therapy
• Small group work
• Bespoke support according to the needs of the child

What specialist services and expertise are accessed by the school?

At times it maybe necessary to consult with outside agencies/professionals for specialist support. These include:

• Autistic Spectrum Education Team (ASET)
• Behaviour Support Team
• CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service)
• Children and Families Support Services
• Educational Psychology Service
• EWO (Education Welfare Officer)

How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

The school's aim, is for children to participate and have access to all activities (relevant for their year group) whilst at Castledyke Primary School, whether they be in school or out. We will seek advice from parents when planning activities and trips to ensure their child's needs are met.

How accessible is the school environment?

The school site is on one level ensuring accessibility for all. There is a ramp at the main office entrance and all classroom doors lead straight onto the playground. There are disabled parking bays in the school car park which are clearly marked.
